Midnight Falls Weyr is set in the First Pass of Pern's history, located in a vast wooded forest like the Redwoods of Earth. Grand waterfalls flow freely where the trees part, allowing cliffside space for humans and dragons alike. It provides a comfortable source of water--and protection from Thread. Many caves are being seared into the rocky cliffs with stonecutting technology brought by the Settlers as they strive to make a home of this hell.

Dragons have been rendered largely useless; fire and wood to not mix well, and the Settlers do not yet have a resource of firestone they can reach without danger. Plus, the death of all gold dragons and the apparent loss of the genetic stations leaves the flying creatures a very bleak future. Now they rely on the dragons' odd cousins, the Thread-eating whers, to keep them safe when Threadfall comes their way.
